Why does this role exist?

Due to an increasing volume of work, we have an exciting opportunity for the right individual to join our successful and expanding team, within the fire area. The work will involve fire testing of materials to determine performance against National and International Standards. This is an entry level role and training will be provided to progress and develop the successful candidate.

You will work for clients in the Fire Protection (Passive & Suppression), Testing and Certification department covering a range of “Reaction to Fire” (RTF) properties, including ignition & flame spread and heat release, toxicity, smoke opacity and dust explosivity.

The value this role will add:
This position will suit someone with a background (or interest) in laboratory working and you will be trained to undertake all aspect of Reaction to Fire. You will be working to UKAS accredited procedures and responsible for ensuring the relevant test equipment is maintained and calibrated. Our testing covers a variety of tasks from evaluation and classification of new construction products for manufacturers prior to their launch on the market, testing of materials present in existing structures and in support of fire investigation work. It also includes audit testing of certified products to monitor the ongoing production quality.
You will be involved in a variety of Reaction to Fire and dust tests at various scales.
The role sits within of the Reaction to Fire team that is part of the Fire Protection (Suppression & Passive) group which tests the fire safety of construction products. You will be a part of this wider team with opportunities to learn and develop your career.

What authority does the role have?
The individual will be responsible for undertaking Reaction to Fire testing in accordance with the relevant test/H&S standards and procedures.
What skills, knowledge and behaviours does the role need?
Essential:
Science background or equivalent laboratory experience
Practical mindset
Maintaining laboratory environment and calibration
Self-motivated and focused
Accurate note-taking, record-keeping and reporting
Organised
Adaptable
Desire to learn
Proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Good customer relationship skills
Desirable:
Technical knowledge of Reaction to Fire testing
Product testing experience preferably relevant to building products or fire testing
